While many renewable energy projects are large-scale, renewable technologies are also suited to rural and remote areas, where energy is often crucial in human development. Globally, an estimated 3 million households get power from small solar PV systems. Micro-hydro systems configured into village-scale or county-scale mini-grids serve many areas. More than 30 million rural households get lighting and cooking from biogas made in household-scale digesters. Biomass cookstoves are used by 160 million households.
Wind Power Future Energy
Lowering the Cost-of-Energy BarSince the late 1970′s the U.S. cost goals for wind power have continued to be about $0.04 per kilowatt hour, despite inflation. Wind turbines have consistently been able to arrive at that level, but by the time they get there, another reduction in the cost of non-renewable fossil fuels has taken place and the bar is lowered further.
Developers of Chinese wind projects are guaranteed a price for power for an initial period — typically about 10 years — by the provincial governments as part of an up-front bidding process.
The estimates fail to include some important factors, said Liming Qiao of the Global Wind Energy Council, a trade association for the global wind industry.
Over the last three years publicly traded alternative energy have been very volatile, with some 2007 returns in excess of 100%, some 2008 returns down 90% or more, and peak-to-trough returns in 2009 again over 100%. In general there are three subsegments of ‘alternative’ energy investment: solar energy, wind energy and hybrid electric vehicles. Alternative energy sources which are renewable, free and have lower carbon emissions than what we have now are wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, and bio fuels. Each of these four segments involve very different technologies and investment concerns.
What Are Some Types Of Alternative Energy Sources
There are several advantages to using natural gas, including the reduces environmental damage, cost, and ease of use, since many homes and businesses could easily be converted to use natural gas. There are disadvantages, just like anything else. It does still releases greenhouse gases, and the process to isolate methane is quite complex.
There are a number of advantages to using wind power. First, it produces no pollution. This means there are no harmful by-products and our environment stays healthy. Secondly, wind energy is a renewable source, so we will never run out of wind. Third, wind turbines can be placed on farms in which livestock are raised. Finally, wind farms can also be built off-shore. Clearly, wind power has some advantages.
Wind power is a very simple process. A wind turbine converts the kinetic energy (motion) of wind into mechanical energy that is used to generate electricity. The energy is fed through a generator, converted a second time into electrical energy, then fed into the grid to be transmitted to a power station. Wind power is abundant in California and Texas, with the two largest wind farms in the world residing in West Texas. Wind is unique because it carries incentives for farmers to give parcels of land for building wind turbines, and has the most potential as far as widespread adoption due to the large areas of land with consistent wind available to harness.
In its March 2011 half-yearly accounts, the company reported that electrical power system sales (excluding inter-segment sales) rose to $105.4 million, from $92.5 million in March 2010. The company does not break down this segment into wind and non-wind sales. However, it reported that wind turbine converter sales increased as a result of increased market share, primarily in China and Germany, and an increase in demand from existing wind turbine converter customers.

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to play the growth in wind is through the turbine manufacturers. Both GE (NYSE:GE) and Vestas (OTCBB:VWDRY) are the two largest and most-efficient turbine producers, and Ming Yang Wind Power Group (NYSE:MY) offers an interesting play on China’s “low-cost” leadership in alternative energy.

Mass Megawatts Wind Power manufactures the MultiAxis Turbosystem, a wind power system that it claims enables power output at relatively low wind speeds. It is targeting sales in California.
To encourage these geothermal projects and others, Ritter, the DOE and the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority in December announced two new programs that will finance energy-efficiency improvements in commercial buildings and renewable energy businesses in the state. The Green Colorado Credit Reserve is expected to serve more than 160 businesses and generate $7 million in new lending, while the Governor’s Energy Office Revolving Loan Program has set aside $13 million to help with large-scale retrofits or companies whose products directly impact the renewable energy sector in Colorado.
Alternative Power Sources Geothermal Energy
Fortunately, with today’s advancements in technology such as binary cycle plants and enhanced geothermal systems (EGS; where rock is artificially fractures to allow for more permeability in the rocks and more flow/heat transfer) many new geothermal resources may be unlocked in the near future. Geothermal power is not likely to ever completely replace fossil fuels, however combined with other renewable sources of energy it has the potential to contribute to a much larger percentage of the world’s energy consumption.
Energy transmission is an intra-state as well as an inter-state issue. Given Texas’ abundance of renewable energy resources, it is just as important to consider how to export Texas renewable energy to other states and regions.
Wind Energy Report Summary
The gains that we are seeking require new innovations in fluid dynamics, control, materials, manufacturing, structures, and electric power distribution, as well of new ways of engaging the public in appreciating and accepting this technology, the associated transmission infrastructure and its effects on reducing climate change. Design and analysis tools need to be developed. Common computer codes need to be shared and refined in an open collegial way that cannot occur in industry. Researchers need to disseminate, debate, and share results openly, accelerating innovation in the subject.
REpower supplied the wind turbines for the project. It supplied eight MM82 model turbines and seven MM92 model turbines. REpower is also responsible for servicing the turbines. It subcontracted Keppel Prince to fabricate sections for 15 wind towers for the wind farm.
“They had a tin ear, I felt, toward the concerns of the adjacent landowners,” he said. “Which was surprising, considering they are the largest developer of wind farms in the country.”
Wind energy, in fact, is one of the few bright spots on the job horizon, with the need for hundreds of qualified wind technicians in the next few years in Illinois alone.
