Yet its March 2011 half-yearly results showed the start of a recovery, with carbon fiber sales rising to $55.2 million, from $43.6 million in the six months to March 2010.

Unlike nuclear, carbon capture and storage (CCS) a means of effectively cleaning’ the emissions released by fossil-fuelled plants was seen as far less likely to threaten the wind industry. Only a third of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the promise offered by CCS is a threat to development of wind power.

If you care for the environment then you can install wind turbine to power your home. Depending on the location cheap wind turbine are available in the market. However, one need to take many factors into consideration before installing wind turbine at home for eg: Permission to install wind turbine at home, Is the site right, how much power do I need to generate, What equipment do I need, Should I go vertical axis or horizontal axis wind turbine. Wind Turbine installation may be high but in the long run they prove to be much cheaper then the non-renewable fossil fuels.

Although less significant, opposition to wind farms at a local level, or nimbyism (not-in-my-back-yard), is also cited as a factor that stalls wind development. However, since policy issues, grid access and site availability are all considered more important, it is clear that respondents see governments and their unwillingness to push through necessary changes, rather than the power of individuals or communities to object, as the key issue blocking the wind industry’s future development. As one respondent said for the industry and the individual I think that there’s more of a push required than a pull’, adding: things won’t change without legislation’. Another agreed that surveys show that the public perception of wind farms has changed a lot in recent years and are now deemed acceptable in most cases, subject to environmental issues etc.’

At the request of the North Carolina General Assembly the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill conducted a 9-month study to assess the feasibility of installing wind turbines in the sounds and off the coast of North Carolina. The request specified that the assessment include an analysis of the spatial distributions of available wind power, ecological risks and synergies, use conflicts affecting site selection, foundation systems and their compatibility with sound and ocean bottom geology and associated geologic dynamics, electric transmission infrastructure, utility statutory and regulatory barriers, the legal context, carbon reduction potential, and economics. Discrete work components were addressed by a project team that drew upon expertise within the University as well as consultants.

Some utilities object to net metering. Usually the issue isn’t money, but control. They don’t want your juice on their wires or they don’t want to set a precedent that could come back to haunt them. There are some distributed generation technologies coming down the pike that utilities definitely won’t want to net meter, including fuel cells and 50 kw microturbines the size of beer kegs. However in the USA and Australia electricity suppliers are becomg more supportive of solar enegy buy back schemes. Also busineses can now take advantage of different suppliers of both gas and electricity and shop for the most economical. Utility Ecchange is one such company in the UK that gives comparison business gas prices for their customers.

Wind is becoming a very economical and environmentally friendly way of energy generation. New Zealand is moving towards building more and more wind farms which I think is great. Other people see them as unsightly and blah blah blah. At the end of the day, it has to be better than nuclear. Cool piece

Personally I believe the future in renewables is in production at the point of consumption (solar pannels on roofs or using new solar technologies which utilise solar dyes to make solar windows, paints, etc), no transmition losses, no community opposition to development, incremental capital outlay, diversified exposure to weather conditions, no black outs and absolute energy security. Absolutely the cost is higher but it’s worth it.

Regardless of whether China is a developing nation or not, they have pulled ahead of US on Wind Power Generation, Solar Photovoltaic, and if we don’t start building Nuclear Reactors they will pull ahead of US on that too.

These charts show how windpower contributes to energy contribution around the world by regions. It is interesting to note that while America leads the world in wind energy production, we still have a long way to go in reducing our dependency on non-renewable energy sources.

There is a reason we do not use alternative energy and it is a good reason. It is not yet cost effective. Nobody wants to pay more for the same product, it would be same as going into any store and giving the give the cashier and extra 10% for nothing. Keep in mind that this 10% figure is not a real figure, it is just an estimate and would probably be 20 to 30% more. Wait till existing energy sources are more costly. Don’t make our electric bill support an other special interest group.

Sounds like everyone in Florida has a dog in the fight when the numbers show that Florida is one of the lowest users of green energy because of high cost and yet the state is pressured to increase the amount and pass cost to consumer. I don`t want to pay 50 cents more for this stuff when power plants fueled by natural gas could be built thus using our own resources AND labor(jobs). Good discussion though.

Many public companies involved in the development of this industry and responsible for large market share do not participate exclusively in renewable energy and have been omitted for this list, most notable of these are BP, GE Energy and Sharp. This list consists of companies whose primary produce is either renewable energy or renewable energy products and services.

The table below shows that in the first 10 months of 2011, the performances of the three new indices varied widely, with the Asia-Oceania index down 33%, while the Americas and EMEA indices were 17% and 14% down. Figure 1 shows that despite recent falls, all three indices remain above their lows of late 2008 and 2009.

The demand for power in Tanzania is growing by more than 50 MW a year, fuelled partly by an expansion of mining undertakings in parts of the country. Currently, hydro is the major source of electricity in Tanzania.

The study by the ETH-Zurich scientists is the first in which the costs of a partial switch to wind and solar power is calculated in detail for individual countries in the south and compared with today& 146;s energy production costs. The previous studies either had a broader focus & 150; such as the global costs of an energy shift & 150; or a narrower one & 150; the viability of individual projects. The ETH-Zurich researchers only considered large power stations in their study, excluding decentralised, off-grid wind turbines and photovoltaic plants. They will address off-grid technologies in an upcoming study.

In Jiuquan province, the preliminary work on the second-phase of its 8-GW initiative is now underway, which is in line with the directives of the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration. Construction for the first 3 GW of wind farms is expected to start in the first half of the year and completed and put into production by year-end. By 2015, total wind power installation capacity in Jiuquan is slated to top 14 GW. In addition, the province has also planned a number of supporting facilities, including pumped storage power stations and peaking power plants (used during peak hours), all of which to be completed during the 12th five year period spanning 2011 to 2015.

Remarkably, the Caltech crew isn’t even the first group of researchers to suggest that we can learn a lot from fish about how best to capture wind. In 2008, the company WhalePower proposed a new kind of wind turbine modeled on the bumpy flipper of the humpback whale, an idea it has since extended to room fans. Okay, fine, a whale is a mammal, not a fish, but the point remains the same: The creatures of the sea appear to have plenty to show us about how to address our energy needs on land.
