The future of wind power

Over the last three years publicly traded alternative energy have been very volatile, with some 2007 returns in excess of 100%, some 2008 returns down 90% or more, and peak-to-trough returns in 2009 again over 100%. In general there are three subsegments of ‘alternative’ energy investment: solar energy, wind energy and hybrid electric vehicles. Alternative energy sources which are renewable, free and have lower carbon emissions than what we have now are wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, and bio fuels. Each of these four segments involve very different technologies and investment concerns.

What Are Some Types Of Alternative Energy Sources

There are several advantages to using natural gas, including the reduces environmental damage, cost, and ease of use, since many homes and businesses could easily be converted to use natural gas. There are disadvantages, just like anything else. It does still releases greenhouse gases, and the process to isolate methane is quite complex.

There are a number of advantages to using wind power. First, it produces no pollution. This means there are no harmful by-products and our environment stays healthy. Secondly, wind energy is a renewable source, so we will never run out of wind. Third, wind turbines can be placed on farms in which livestock are raised. Finally, wind farms can also be built off-shore. Clearly, wind power has some advantages.

Wind power is a very simple process. A wind turbine converts the kinetic energy (motion) of wind into mechanical energy that is used to generate electricity. The energy is fed through a generator, converted a second time into electrical energy, then fed into the grid to be transmitted to a power station. Wind power is abundant in California and Texas, with the two largest wind farms in the world residing in West Texas. Wind is unique because it carries incentives for farmers to give parcels of land for building wind turbines, and has the most potential as far as widespread adoption due to the large areas of land with consistent wind available to harness.

To encourage these geothermal projects and others, Ritter, the DOE and the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority in December announced two new programs that will finance energy-efficiency improvements in commercial buildings and renewable energy businesses in the state. The Green Colorado Credit Reserve is expected to serve more than 160 businesses and generate $7 million in new lending, while the Governor’s Energy Office Revolving Loan Program has set aside $13 million to help with large-scale retrofits or companies whose products directly impact the renewable energy sector in Colorado.

Fortunately, with today’s advancements in technology such as binary cycle plants and enhanced geothermal systems (EGS; where rock is artificially fractures to allow for more permeability in the rocks and more flow/heat transfer) many new geothermal resources may be unlocked in the near future. Geothermal power is not likely to ever completely replace fossil fuels, however combined with other renewable sources of energy it has the potential to contribute to a much larger percentage of the world’s energy consumption.

It is wrong to state that because Bermuda is only 21 square miles in total area, less gasoline is used proportionately. LP gas (liquid propane) is available in Bermuda for cooking, heating, hot water supply, clothes’ drying and other commercial purposes as an alternative to electricity, but is not produced in Bermuda. It comes from Argentina, is supplied by the giant Shell oil company and imported via one of Shell’s locally based subsidiaries by tanker ships in bulk. It is then distributed by the three wholesale and retail commercial companies shown below – all Bermudian joint stock companies. The gas is not underground piped to homes and businesses on a metered system from a central plant. Instead, it is brought to premises in cylinders and piped to the relevant appliances.

The energy policy of India is largely defined by the country’s burgeoning energy deficit and increased focus on developing alternative sources of energy, particularly nuclear, solar and wind energy.

The sun also provides enough energy that can be stored for use long after the sun sets and even during extended cloudy periods. But making it available is much easier said than done. It would be cost prohibitive to make solar energy mainstream for major world consumption in the near future. The technology is pretty much ready for many business and consumer applications, but it would be way too expensive to replace the current energy infrastructure used for fossil fuel energy. Still, according to the European Photovoltaic Industry Association, solar power could provide energy for more than one billion people by 2020 and 26 percent of global energy needs by 2040.

Alternative Power Sources Future

Technologically advanced societies have become increasingly dependent on external energy sources for transportation, the production of many manufactured goods, and the delivery of energy services. This energy allows people who can afford the cost to live under otherwise unfavorable climatic conditions through the use of heating, ventilation, and/or air conditioning. Level of use of external energy sources differs across societies, as do the climate, convenience, levels of traffic congestion, pollution and availability of domestic energy sources.

Tidal power can be extracted from Moon-gravity-powered tides by locating a water turbine in a tidal current, or by building impoundment pond dams that admit-or-release water through a turbine. The turbine can turn an electrical generator, or a gas compressor, that can then store energy until needed. Coastal tides are a source of clean, free, renewable, and sustainable energy.
